Ever wonder how two girls with eleven children ended up with a soap business?!? Yeah, we ask ourselves that same question! Actually, we pinch ourselves just about every day that we get to do this… Made On Acorn Hill feels like such a gift!
So how did it start? Well actually, this business never started as a business. It all started with a conversation over lunch in the fall of 2010, when we discovered that we were both planning to give handmade, homemade gifts for Christmas. We decided it would be much more fun to make our gifts together, and after discussing lots of ideas, we decided on goat milk soap. We gave our three batches of soap away to friends and family that Christmas, and pretty soon, people started asking us if they could buy more soap. Initially, we told everyone that we didn’t sell our soap, and we had already given it all away anyway! But as more people asked, we began to consider the possibility… what if we made more soap?
The following spring, we ordered supplies and made more soap, and we also made 3 herbal salves, hard lotion bars, and lip balm. These other products were things that we made and used, and loved in our own families. We launched Made On Acorn Hill in May with an email to friends and family, and the products that we’d made were sold in less than two weeks! We got busy ordering more supplies and making more products and sent our second email in June telling our friends and family that we had more soap ready. That time, the soap we made was gone in about a week… twice as much soap and gone in half the time! That was when we really started to ask ourselves, “Are we REALLY starting a business?!?”
We’ve amped up our production from those first bars of Christmas gift soap, but it’s still the same two girls hand pouring every bar of soap. Even though our product line has expanded, all of our products are still hand crafted in small batches and lovingly prepared by two mamas who use these products on themselves and on their own children. It has become quite a family affair…one husband is a counselor in his day job and comes home and becomes a goat milker, and the other husband is an attorney by day and a late night label designer extraordinaire. Occasionally, you might catch our kids gathered around the table with us helping put lip balm tubes in shrink wrap sleeves, and twice a year, even our friends chip in with helping us put labels on soap and other products in exchange for free “seconds” goodies!
Some days we definitely think we’re crazy to be doing what we’re doing… operating a business while juggling the many other roles that our “real job” of being moms requires, but we really are having a blast! So many times as we’re making soap… stirring the oils in the huge pot, adding essential oils and natural colorants, and creating swirled patterns in the freshly-poured soap in the mold box, we look at each other and say, “Can you believe that we GET to do this!?!?”
So, from a mutual desire in both of our hearts to give handmade, homemade gifts at Christmas and a desire for natural products for our own families came this business that we named Made On Acorn Hill. (If you’re wondering where the name came from, it’s a combination of our two street names, since this all started in our kitchens!) Made On Acorn Hill is an overflow of the lives of two mamas and their families that has grown organically into what it is today.
We hope you love the products that are Made On Acorn Hill as much as we do, but we often joke that if nobody ever bought anything we made, it really would be fine. Our families would just have soap and natural products for life!
